Eagles Competing With the Team Across the Street

Written By Bob Cunningham On Tuesday, October 13, 2009

With the Phils back in the NLCS, the pressure is on.

While the Eagles compete with the other 31 NFL teams for a chance to play in the Super Bowl this February, they're also competing with the team playing across the street in Citizen's Bank Park.

The fact of the matter is that in this rough economy, there's not enough money amongst the fans to distribute between the Eagles and the Phillies. The 76ers and Flyers are really more of an afterthought at this point, even though the Flyers are contenders in the NHL the same way that the Eagles are contenders in the NFL.

There's a group of fans that follow the Sixers or Flyers exclusively, but that's a small percentage.

With the Phillies winning the World Series last year, and now back and in the NLCS starting this Thursday, the Eagles are competing heavily for revenue in the city. If they want to keep stride with a Phillies team looking to repeat as champions, they will have to capture their own this Feburary in Miami.

While the Phillies are the flavor of the city right now, this is a football city. The Eagles are the heartbeat of the city and are only starting to get passed by the Phillies because of their immense success. If the Eagles even make it to the Super Bowl, they most likely would once again surpass the Phillies as far as merchandise and ticket sales go.

Of course, if they win the Super Bowl, the Phillies could win the World Series again this year, but would become a distant second to the Eagles.

I'm a Phillies fan. I buy Phillies merchandise and I go to games, but I bleed Eagles green as does the majority of the city. It's nice to have a winner in town finally, but most fans are just hoping that the Phillies success will push the Eagles to finally win a Super Bowl, and it seems as though it has.

The Phillies are most likely the reason why Michael Vick and Jeremiah Trotter are both wearing Eagles green.

Back when the Eagles were on top of the city with no real competition, Reid, Banner, and Lurie would have stayed away from Vick like a plague, and while they may have entertained the idea of signing Trott in an emergency situation, it most likely would not have happened.

That's not to say that the Eagles did not want to win a Super Bowl, but they didn't feel the sense of urgency and the push from an outside source like the Phillies.

All in all, this is a win-win for the city. We get to watch our beloved Phillies continue to win, all the while pushing our Eagles to follow suit and keep pace.

Let's just hope it does just that.
