Sorry raving-610WIP-guy, Reid is stay for another 3-5.
The back-and-forth about whether Reid should stay on as head coach or be replaced, quite frankly, is ridiculous. He's the winningest head coach the Eagles have ever had, and he has groomed the very best quarterback that the Eagles have ever had.
But let's ship him off for someone else, along with that aforementioned quarterback.
Genius.
Luckily for the city with a few off-base fans, the guys making the decisions have enough sense to keep Big Red around until it's either absolutely necessary that the team make a change, or until Reid is ready to leave on his own.
So what led to the contract talks after what would appear to be a season where the Eagles are only just barely meeting expectations?
Firstly, and most important of all, the team is filled to the brim with young talent that can carry this team for the next six-eight years at all or most of the core positions. Reid drafted these guys, so it shows that he still has an eye for talent that's needed to not only sustain success for the franchise, but to win a Super Bowl.
Most would say that he's had 10 years, and should already have a Super Bowl, and while that may be true, it's not uncommon that even a good head coach doesn't have a ring.
It took Bill Cowher 15 years, it took Tony Dungy 11 years (sidenote: Reid is in year 11), a coach like Marty Schottenheimer never even appeared in a Super Bowl despiting accumulating 200 wins and a .613 win percentage, and Jeff Fisher, who has been the head coach of the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans for 16 years, still has not won a Super Bowl.
Even for those who don't believe in Reid, the question becomes, who takes over?
Marty Mornhinweg had his shot as a head coach, granted it was in Detroit, but he racked up a total of five wins in two years. Sean McDermott is only now a coordinator, so he's not ready. Maybe a guy like Pat Shurmur or Mark Whipple would have been good candidates, but they've moved on to St. Louis and the University of Miami respectively.
Anyway, I'm getting off track.
Reid will most likely sign a three to five year extension in the next few weeks. Then the team will turn its focus on what to do about Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb. Both contracts run out in 2010, so this offseason will be decision time.
Should be exciting.
