Kolb's Only Job Today: Don't Turn the Ball Over

Written By Bob Cunningham On Sunday, September 20, 2009

Hope we don't see Kolb's alter ego, the Houston Horror.

So what may have been nothing more than a hunch fueled by the desire to see the franchise quarterback out on the field, I was wrong in my assumption that McNabb would play. Kevin Kolb will be making his first start since being drafted in the second round of the 2007 NFL draft.

Now that this is about a 99 percent certainty, let's outline everything that Kolb has to do today.

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

Well, except hold on to the football.

Outside of that, there is nothing for Kevin Kolb to do. As long as he doesn't fumble the center-quarterback exchange or the handoff, and doesn't throw a pick when they run the screen, he and the team should be just fine.

Of course this also goes all the way up to Andy Reid and that playcalling chart. As long as he runs the ball all day long, the Eagles will win this game. If he rides Brian Westbrook, LeSean McCoy and (and this is key) and Eldra Buckley, the Eagles should roll on the Saints without a single yard through the air.

Reid will try to throw with Kolb, but they should be very simple play with very easy reads. Then Kolb needs to be told that if the reads aren't there, he needs to just run. Tell him to find any hole and fall forward. It doesn't matter if it's even a yard or two, just don't take a sack, and don't turn the ball over.

Let's be honest, the Saints are already the most overrated team in the NFL. Drew Brees is great, sure, no argument there. However, outside of Marques Colston those receivers are pedestrian, and that defense is putrid. They can toot their own horn and say how they've improved but it's nonsense.

The defense gave up 27 points to the Detroit Lions, so the Eagles should be able to score at least that. Add the fact that there is no way Brees even comes close to duplicating his six-touchdown performance and you have a game that the Eagles could, and should, win.
