What Kind of Money Will DeSean Jackson Want?

Written By Bob Cunningham On Tuesday, December 08, 2009

Things could be coming to head very, very soon.

Either this offseason or the next, the young sensation DeSean "Fraction" Jackson is going to want his rookie contract thrown out and get a big payday. He's the best big-play threat in the entire league, and is arguably a No. 1 receiver -- already -- in only his second season.

So, presumably, DeSean is looking to get No. 1 receiver money. The going rate for a No. 1 receiver today is somewhere between $8-10 million, so that's where Jackson will be expecting to get paid. However, with Drew Rosenhaus in his corner, it wouldn't be surprising for him to ask for $11-12 million per year.

As the best big-play threat in the league, he may be worth that much.

Recently, Larry Fitzgerald and Devin Hester signed contracts for four years and $40 million. Jackson isn't quite on the level of Fitz, but he's a far superior receiver to Hester. Add on the big-play ability of Jackson returning punts as well and you have the makings of a huge contract, the likes of which the Eagles haven't paid out in years.

Am I the only fan worried that this could get ugly?

The Eagles are willing to pay a player who they feel deserves to get paid, so that's not a concern. The concern is that, with Rosenhaus negotiating, will Jackson ask for some ridiculous dollar amount that the Eagles absolutely refuse to even talk about? If that happens, will Jackson-Rosenhaus stick to their guns and begin threatening a hold-out and everything else?

It seems out of DeSean's character, but money can do crazy things to people. Then having Rosenhaus, who is the worst (or best) money-grubber in the business, will surely have the Eagles on edge from the first day they sit down to talk.

Perhaps this is just my pessimist side talking, but any time the Eagles have a high-profile contract to discuss, it seems like the worst in people comes out.

Fingers crossed, Philly.
