Vick sits with Eagles coach Andy Reid and mentor Tony Dungy.
Many people were wondering why no news of a workout with Philadelphia came out before the signing to give some inclination that Vick may in fact become an Eagle. Per league rules, teams are obligated to report workouts to the league office, and there's no way the Eagles would sign a player before working him out, right?
Apparently, that thinking is in fact, wrong.
The Eagles did not host Vick for a workout in order to keep the move a secret from the media and from the rest of the league. If other teams knew that the Eagles were players, they may have offered him more money to drag him out of Philly.
One has to question the reasoning behind not working out a guy who has not played football in over two years, and is a huge question mark on where he is athletically. Spending two years in prison is not exactly the best way to get into "football shape."
However, Vick has been working out with a trainer over these past few months that he's been out of prison, and he looks to still be in good shape, maybe even a bit stronger. The Eagles are also looking at this from the perspective that he's really all reward, and hardly any, if not zero, risk.
His first practice with the team is tomorrow, so if he doesn't look good or can't pass a run test, they can cut him without any real repercussions at all. If he is still in good football shape, and is even half the athlete he was before his prison stint, the Eagles got a top quality athlete at a rock bottom price.
It boiled down to the Eagles seeing the chance for a bargain, and they took it. Vick on the field at the same time as guys like Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook, LeSean McCoy, and DeSean Jackson will really create a problem for defenses.
Also, defensive coordinators will be up all night devoting extra hours to stopping the five or six plays that Vick will see, so even if those five or six plays don't work, you're causing the coordinator to take focus away from another aspect of the game. Either way, this is a win-win for the Eagles.
The Eagles won't blink when they see the protesters, as I don't believe that they really care. They will stand behind Vick 100 percent until he gives them a reason not to. Really, this is the best place for Vick as a person, and as a player.
