Adam Schefter Doesn't Think Eagles Will Sign Asomugha

Written By Bob Cunningham On Monday, February 28, 2011
Adam Schefter was getting peppered with questions from his Twitter followers about Nnamdi Asomugha and where he might end up. After shooting down the hopes of a Green Bay Packers fan, an Eagles fan piped up and asked if Asomugha could find his way to Philadelphia.

"More likely (than Green Bay)," Schefter said, "but (I) don't see it."

The restraints of Twitter didn't allow Schefter to elaborate, but I wish he would. Is this just a gut instinct or has he heard something to make him believe the Eagles aren't interested?

On the surface, it looks like a perfect fit. Asomugha reportedly wants to play for a contender on the east coast, the Eagles are in desperate need of a corner to play across from Asante Samuel, and the team has shown with Samuel and others that they will spend if they believe a guy is worth it.

And if they believed Samuel was worth $10 million per season three years ago, it stands to reason they'd find Asomugha -- a guy clearly a notch or two above every corner in the league -- worth $15-18 million per season.

With Samuel and Asomugha on the field at the same time, it will be very difficult for opposing offenses to pass the ball. On their own, each guy can shut down an entire half of a field, so putting them together would force offenses to attack the middle of the field or take their chances with one or the other, most likely Samuel.

Consistently attacking Samuel might mean a big play every once in a while if he guesses wrong on one of his gambles, but it will also mean giving an interception artist a lot more chances to do what he does best and take the ball the other direction.

Having both guys will also allow new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo to install and execute the type of attacking defense Jim Johnson designed and used when he had Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent, then Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard.

Two very good corners are needed to execute a blitz-heavy defense, and signing Asomugha would certainly help make Castillo's scheme much more successful a la what Antonio Cromartie and Darrelle Revis did for Rex Ryan and his scheme in New York with the Jets.

We don't know if or when there will be a free agency, but if there is I would expect Andy Reid and Howie Roseman to pursue Asomugha the same way they pursued Samuel, and hopefully with the same result.
