Eagles Work Out a Former Philly Favorite

Written By Bob Cunningham On Thursday, September 24, 2009

Could we see the "Axe man" in Philly yet again?

Somewhat desperate for linebacker help, the Philadelphia Eagles have brought in Jeremiah Trotter for a workout. Trotter has not played in the NFL since 2007 as a backup in Tampa Bay, and has not played in Philadelphia since 2006.

This could either be the Eagles paying a desperate Trotter a favor, or it may signal a real desperation for linebacker help. Trotter has apparently been bugging the organization to work him out ever since he was released by the Buccaneers, and they just now have granted him his wish. If they were simply humoring him, they probably would have worked him out much earlier.

This signals a real displeasure with the play of their linebackers, which isn't unfounded because the linebackers were terrible against the Saints, even allowing Bust Bush to rush right up the middle for a touchdown.

In 2004, the Eagles were having issues stopping the run with Mark Simoneau, but once Trotter was inserted as the starter, the rush defense went from the mid-20's to 10th overall. However, in 2004, Trotter was 27.

He's not 27 anymore.

If the Eagles were really desperate for linebacker help, aren't there better linebackers in free agency? Perhaps not more talented, but certainly younger and healthier. For example, Napolean Harris, Rocky Boiman and Matt Wilhelm, who both have been to training camp with the Eagles, and maybe even a guy like Derrick Brooks, who I believe can still play.

Bringing in Trotter, even if they are desperate, just does not make sense. Unless, of course, he blew them away in his workout.

Which I'm guessing he didn't.

Even though, we all love Trotter, so I hope he did.

In an unrelated note, Sheldon Brown was fined $10,000 for wearing his "Jason" mask out of the tunnel. Really? Brown gets fined 10 stacks, but Damione Lewis gets nothing for belly-flopping onto McNabb? Ridiculous.
