Andy Reid Names Michael Vick Eagles' Starting QB

Written By Bob Cunningham On Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Vick is the man moving forward for the rest of 2010.

The Kevin Kolb era in Philadelphia is over. Kevin Kolb has been sent to the bench in favor of Michael Vick, who will be the Eagles' starter for the remainder of the 2010 season.

According to sources, Reid simply thought Vick was playing too well to sit. He is apparently still of the thinking that Kolb is a high-quality starter, but that doesn't matter anymore as benching Kolb will likely destroy any confidence he had left.

But after Reid said Kolb was going to be the starter moving forward, why would he decide to stick with Vick so suddenly?

The film. And more specifically, Reid hadn't watched it yet. He likely sat down Monday night to watch the film and was blown away by how well Vick passed the ball, moved around behind the line of scrimmage, and commanded the offense.

He probably decided Monday night that he was going to go with Vick, but took the night to sleep on it and talk it over with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and owner Jeff Lurie.

But with the way Vick has been playing, what are they going to say? The personnel decisions might be slipping away from Reid as the years move on, but all decision made on the football field still go through Reid.

Many around Philly will likely question this and wonder why Kolb would hit the bench "after only 10 passes," but the proof is in the pudding. The eye in the sky doesn't lie. Insert any generic saying here.

Bottom line, Vick has been phenomenal during the offseason and over the past game and a half and was clearly the right choice. Reid probably also feared the backlash from within the locker room if Kolb went out against Jacksonville next week and lost them the game.

Young or not, this is a group of guys that feels like they have a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl and anyone hurting that chance is not going to get their support for too long -- including Reid.

This was a decision that had to be made, it had to be made now, and it's the right decision for this team moving forward.
