Scott will be given an opportunity to start in Arizona.


It's not exactly a surprise to see Charles Scott on a different roster, but to see him get there via trade was certainly not expected.

The big, bullish fullback/running back did not fit Andy Reid's system. He tried as hard as he could to show that he could be an option out of the backfield and even split out and run some patterns, but it just was never enough to have Reid convinced.

The move to fullback spelled the end for Scott one way or another since keeping him around as a short-yardage back was never truly an option with Leonard Weaver more than capable of filling that role and some.

In exchange, the Eagles received rookie cornerback Jorrick Calvin. At this point, I don't know a whole lot about Calvin, so I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for some film of the Arizona Cardinals' preseason games. Once I get my hands on some, I'll make sure to watch Calvin and formulate an opinion, but odds are he doesn't make the final roster.

He'll be asked to quickly pick up Sean McDermott's defense and show something Thursday night in the Eagles' final preseason game, so the odds are definitely working against him.

Scott, on the other hand, has a great chance to not only make the roster, but become a starter.

The Cardinals' starting fullback, Nehemiah Broughton, went down with a knee injury in the Cards' most recent game and it might be a bit more serious than we know. The trade for Scott would seem to mean they're looking for a guy to take over and must like what they've seen from Scott on film.

Of course, I'm not sure what that could be, since Scott has seen minimal time.

It's going to be interesting to keep track of Scott because he looks like he could have a career as a short-yardage, change-of-pace back if a team will give him that chance. As a fullback, however, I don't see the blocking ability required.
