Thomas may find his way from New Orleans back to Philly.
As reported several weeks ago by my colleague Garry Cobb over at GCobb.com, Hollis Thomas was in fact at the NovaCare complex during OTA's to take a physical and meet with team officials.
Now, Derrick Gunn is reporting (via Facebook) that a decision will be made by the Eagles on the Hollis Thomas front before the start of training camp on July 31, which is the date that veterans report.
Gunn also points out that if the Eagles do sign Thomas, they will be forced to make a roster move in order to get below the maximum a team may take to camp. This would probably mean the release or trade of Dan Klecko.
Other guys the Eagles could part with are Eldra Buckley, a reserve running back, Eugene Bright, a reserve tight end, or perhaps even Matt Schobel or one of the various reserve offensive linemen.
While I'd prefer if they go that route, they don't really have a need for Klecko if Thomas is on the roster. Five defensive tackles just seems like overkill, especially for a team that only carries a maximum of four.
Hopefully Reid will keep Klecko around because of his versatility if nothing else, but that remains to be seen.
If Thomas is brought on board, expect it to be a one-year deal, two at the very most, worth around $1.5 million with some incentives.
Apparently several other teams have made offers to Thomas, but it's clear that he'd like to finish his career in Philly. If the price is even reasonable, he will become an Eagle.
How much does Thomas have left in the tank? That remains to be seen. Also, when would Thomas play? He's not a third-down pass-rushing type of guy, but more of a first and second down guy.
The Eagles already have two Pro Bowl caliber first and second down defensive tackles, so I'm curious where Thomas would fit in. Perhaps on the goal line and in short yardage? That makes sense but why cut a guy who can do it all for someone who is limited?
Thomas is a fan-favorite, and personally one of my favorite players, but from a roster and strategy standpoint, the move doesn't seem to make much sense.
